Special exhibition Stadtmuseum: Ratoldescella – Radolfzell

Radolfzell celebrates – and looks back on more than 1200 years of eventful history. To mark the town’s anniversary, the Radolfzell Town Museum will be showing the special exhibition “Ratoldescella – Radolfzell” from May 17, 2026.

The exhibition begins with the founding of the town of Radolfzell in 826 by Bishop Radolt of Verona. With the “Ratoldescella”, a first ecclesiastical settlement, he laid the foundation stone for today’s town. The presentation traces his life as a religious and political player in early medieval Europe – from Reichenau via Aachen and Rome to Verona. Historical views and reconstructions bring the old cityscape back to life. An interactive display of Heber’s map from 1708 shows many exciting details of the Radolfzell area during the Baroque period. At the same time, the exhibition also sheds light on the vanished Radolfzell, from the Hölle brewery to the “Café Achteck”, and commemorates people from Radolfzell who sought their fortune abroad. Their stories show how home lives on in memory.

The exhibition can be seen in the Radolfzell City Museum from May 17th. It invites all visitors to embark on a multifaceted journey through the past of the town on Lake Constance.

The city museum is open Thursdays – Sundays from 11.00 am – 5.00 pm.

Radolfzell 3226

Radolfzell is inviting visitors to a special exhibition at Villa Bosch to mark the town’s anniversary. In collaboration with the University of Constance and the Constance University of Applied Sciences (HTWG), students of history, communication design and architecture are developing an innovative and interactive exhibition that looks back 1,200 years and forward 1,200 years at the same time.

The focus is on the idea of a time capsule. For centuries, people have been preserving messages for posterity, hidden in foundation stones, church spires or attics.

They contain things of such great importance that they are meant to stand the test of time and may only be opened in the distant future. The exhibition takes up this tradition and poses the question:

What should Radolfzell leave behind for the future?

Which memories, experiences and hopes are worth preserving for future generations?

Visitors can expect an exhibition that not only provides impressive insights into the history of Radolfzell, but also invites them to explore the challenges of the present and visions for the future.

People can and should therefore contribute their own thoughts and wishes and play an active role in helping to preserve traces of the present for the year 3226.

In the end, everyone decides for themselves: What should be included in a time capsule?

Opening hours Villa Bosch:

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Derschka

Around 1,200 years ago, Bishop Radolt of Verona had a church built on Reichenau land, which is rightly regarded as the starting point of Radolfzell’s town history. This raises questions: What motivated a bishop from northern Italy to act in this way outside his diocese? Moreover, there is no founding document that could vouch for this process. We read about it in a literary text of uncertain credibility. Are there nevertheless indications that allow us to outline the foundation in terms of facts and time? The lecture shows what can be reliably reported about Radolt and his work on Lake Constance.

Arriving in Radolfzell?

Today, people from over 110 countries of origin live in Radolfzell. While some feel very connected to the city, others still experience invisibility, a lack of opportunities to help shape the city or even exclusion.

Am I from Radolfzell or Radolfzell? Am I German?
Am I Turkish? Am I both? Am I neither?

Belonging and identification are not only a question of citizenship and political participation opportunities, but also part of a cultural identification process that requires mutual respect and recognition.

The multi-part research and encounter project explores the question of how people with a history of migration and their descendants identify with the city of Radolfzell today. In four consecutive modules – storytelling project, city walk, dialog round and creative workshop – participants from different backgrounds and age groups come together to develop personal perspectives and common views. By combining different methods, the aim is to create a dialog between the generations, make cultural and social participation more visible and ideally provide impetus for various institutions.

The project is looking for people with a history of migration in Radolfzell (1st to 3rd generation) and from different backgrounds, school pupils and young people, senior citizens and people without a history of migration – as listeners and contributors. Social and cultural institutions in particular can act as venues for the dialog round and the creative workshop. A joint closing event is planned for November 2026.

Anyone interested in sharing their migration story can send an email to handan.aksuenger-kizil@univie.ac.at.

Radolfzell on the move

“Radolfzell in motion” transforms the market square into a lively sports arena where various stations are set up in the open air. Each station offers a different sporting challenge and is supervised by local clubs, which can thus present themselves to a wide audience. The clubs will also provide on-site catering. The marketplace becomes a meeting place where visitors can linger, watch and, above all, get active themselves – whether in friendly competition or trying out new disciplines. The requirements are deliberately designed so that all age groups and people with disabilities can participate equally and experience the fun of movement and community together.
